Information

Bulletproof plates

Bulletproof plates are anti-ballistic panels usually fitted into plate carriers and some bulletproof vests or tactical vests. They are also known as body armor plates, ballistic plates or trauma plates. Ballistic plates can be used stand-alone or in conjunction with other armor. They serve to defeat higher threats and may be considered as a form of applique armor.

Materials used in bulletproof plates

There are two types of bulletproof materials, hard and soft.  Soft bulletproof materials are mainly made out of Kevlar or Aramid, a synthetic material woven into an elastic fabric.  Hard bulletproof materials are metal, such as steel or aluminum alloys.  Ceramic plates are also used in body armor and provide National Institute of Justice Type III protection, allowing them to stop rifle bullets.

Standard of bulletproof plates

There are different levels of bulletproof protection. The two common plate sizes are 10x12 inches and 11x14 inches. A standard ten by 12 inches plate is approximately 7.5 pounds. While levels IIA, II and IIIA are all considered soft armor, III and IV are hard plates.

Materials used in bulletproof plates

There are different materials used in bulletproof plates such as Kevlar, steel, polyethylene, ceramic and metal such as steel or aluminum alloys.

Can civilians buy ballistic plates?

The legality of civilians buying ballistic plates varies depending on the country and state laws. In Australia, for example, it is unlawful for civilians to possess or use body armor without a valid permit in some states1. However, in the United States, civilians can purchase AR500 plates.

How do bulletproof plates work?

Bulletproof plates work by absorbing the energy from impacts and dispersing it to the other layers thus stopping the bullets, shrapnel and stabbings. For instance, when a bullet strikes the body armor it is caught and trapped by a mesh of strong tightly woven fibers.

Why does the military use ceramic plates?

The U.S. military uses ceramic plates and Kevlar body armor because the ceramic plates are capable of stopping a Springfield 30.06 round with a tungsten penetrator. Ceramic plates are commonly used as inserts in soft ballistic vests and provide National Institute of Justice Type III protection, allowing them to stop rifle bullets. The ceramic plate absorbs much or even all of the kinetic energy from the bullet, while the hard metal plate can still transfer some of that energy through vibration, which can cause bruising or other injuries.

How to choose the right bulletproof plates

Choosing the right bulletproof plates depends on the size of the plates that fit you best. The best way to find the right size is to take some measurements for yourself. You can measure across your chest from nipple to nipple and take a measurement from your sternum notch (the top of your sternum) to your belly button. Once you have your measurements, you can compare them to body armor specifications to select the appropriate armor model.
